What does a doula really do?

11/9/2018

"As a doula I provide informational, emotional, and physical support for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum."

Yes, technically, that is the most succinct way to describe what we do. But what does that really look like? When you hire a doula, what is that going to do for you? Will you feel more prepared to face the intensity of birth? (Probably.) Will they make the pain, fear, or stress go away? (No, but you will know how to manage them.) Will they really be there for the times you can't yet foresee that you'll need a completely new person in your life to consult? (Absolutely.)

Here's what you can expect when you hire a doula:
  • I will meet with you during pregnancy. We use this time to discuss your expectations, partner involvement, comfort measures, postpartum arrangements, break-glass scenarios, and any other issues that may arise, affecting your birth.
  • I will ask the right questions and help you find answers.
  • I will push you to put the most effort into your priorities.
  • I will learn everything I can about you that will help me be what you need at your birth.
  • I will work with your partner so that they will want me there as much as you do.
  • I will help you locate a care provider, childbirth class, lactation educator and/or consultant, chiropractor,  acupuncturist, new baby care class, postpartum assistance, or peer group, as needed.
  • I will help bring mindfulness, release and focus to your last weeks of pregnancy.
  • I will go on call at 38 weeks and remain available 24/7 until you give birth.
  • I will bring everything I have to help you emotionally and physically to achieve a birth you will cherish.
  • I will talk you through your choices again and again so that you feel confident that you've made the best ones.
  • I will protect your space and advocate for compassionate care for you and your family.
  • I will guide you around those "corners" in birth when you can't see far enough ahead to know that you will make it.
  • I will stay until I see you take a few bites of a meal and lay your head back on your pillow in release.
  • I will guide your hands as you feed your baby for the very first time.
  • I will leave you with an easy-access list of referrals, should you need them in the first few days.
  • I will meet you at home to prepare the way for a healing postpartum.
  • I stay in touch throughout the first year and beyond, always ready to listen. If you need resources, I have them. I won’t let you get lost.
